New to trucking? Learn the load flow first.
A load has a simple rhythm: setup, book, pickup, haul, deliver, invoice, and file records. Most confusing terms make more sense once you know which step they belong to.
Trucking vocabulary is easier when you read it as a workflow instead of a random list. A broker packet comes before the first load. A rate confirmation controls the load agreement. The BOL starts at pickup. POD matters after delivery. Detention, lumper fees, and accessorial charges need proof before billing goes smoothly.
Before booking
Learn carrier, broker, shipper, consignee, lane, spot rate, contract rate, and broker packet.
Before pickup
Check the rate confirmation, appointment, equipment, loading type, and accessorial instructions.
After delivery
Collect POD, confirm lumper or detention paperwork, submit the invoice, and keep records clean.
Read a load file in order
Start with who is involved: shipper, consignee, broker, carrier, dispatcher, driver, and receiver. Then move to the documents: broker packet, rate confirmation, BOL, POD, invoice, and any receipts or approvals. Last, check the money terms that change the result: linehaul, fuel surcharge, accessorial charges, detention, layover, and deadhead miles.
If a term affects compliance, insurance, factoring, tax, or registration, treat the glossary page as orientation and follow the current source, contract, policy, or official record before making a decision.
